CASA LUEZA DE BUIL

Where History Comes Alive

Short walks around the house

Santa Maria de Buil is known by nature lovers around the world. Geologist students make it their study area, birdwatchers have made 100+ observations in a week, butterfly experts visit the area to observe rare species. wildflowers are abundant in spring and wildlife such as Genet Cat, fox, badger, hares, wild boars and Deer are frequently seen during the evenings and nights. Moreover, the landscape around the village is unique and goes back to the Eocene period (some 40 million years ago) when the area was a delta riverbed before the pyreneees were formed and the sea retreated. Between Santa María de Buil and Arcusa, abundant Nummulites can be found on the outcrops. These fossils, characteristic of the Eocene period and resembling little coins, are usually known as "Dineretes de Sevil". Numerous other species of shells, snails, molusks and fossilised remains of some vertebrate animals  and ripple stones can be found on the outcrops surrounding the village.

The "Tozal" de Buil, where once a mighty defence tower stood, towers high above the village from where visitors have a 360 degrees view of the surrounding mixed landscape of cultivated fields, forest and  fascinating rock formations. Numerous canyons with beautiful waterfalls surround the village. The PR-HU 70, a 17 km walking trail from Ainsa to Arcusa winds past the village and the GR 1, the long distance trail that runs from the Mediterranean to the Atlantic crosses the PR_HU 70 above Arcusa, close to santa Maria de Buil.   Other interesting walks are marked with cairns, often placed by the owner of Casa Lueza de Buil who is happy to give more details or even accompany clients for those short but beautiful walks.
